On a Friday afternoon outside the student union at Appalachian State University, college students did what college students do. They loafed. They carried Frisbees to toss. They mostly ignored a maskless preacher shouting about sinners and salvation.It was August 21, the end of the first week of classes, and the atmosphere seemed almost normal.
