The American Express Members Project

To kick off the DonorsChoose blog, I thought I’d share the email sent to all our donors and newsletter subscribers following the American Express Members Project. —————– Friends, Out of 7,000 nonprofit initiatives, DonorsChoose.org finished 2nd in the American Express Members Project. Twenty-two thousand people voted for our entry, “Teachers Ask. You Choose. Students Learn.” We gave it everything. Staff members worked into the night and throughout the weekend to rally our donors and teachers. Board members called upon all their associates. You, our constituents, rose to the challenge. During our campaign… DonorsChoose.org donors asked thousands of their friends to

American Express Members Project Update

Great news on the Members Project front! American Express is awarding $100,000 to the four other semi-finalists who made it into the Top 5. All of the proceeds will go to fulfilling projects on our site. In this competition, being #2 still means getting much-needed resources into classrooms! We would also like to extend our congratulations to Dr. Gregory Allgood, whose project won the American Express Members Project. Safe water for children is an outcome worth celebrating. Comments

A change in our teacher registration process

The DonorsChoose.org tech team has been working hard all summer to prepare DonorsChoose.org to open to teachers in all 50 states. Some of the new and improved functionality is strictly behind-the-scenes, while other updates will change the donor or teacher user experience…all for the better, we hope! To increase awareness of the changes and explain some of the thinking behind them, we thought it’d be a good idea to talk about some of the changes in our new blog. We’ll kick this off by introducing the new “email address verification” step that we’ve added to teacher registration process. New DonorsChoose.org

Hiring our namesakes…

Robert B. & Natalie F. in the Heartland Region recently hired Robert T. & Natalie H. to join their team. The national office has now hired two Laurens and there are three Jonathans (albeit with different spellings). When setting out to hire an Atlantic Region Deputy Director this summer, I was determined not to make the same mistake and hire my namesake. So I’d like to announce my rock-star candidate, whom everyone loves, who officially started in August: Kate H. . . . Comments

Changes To ‘Our Impact’ Numbers

At DonorsChoose.org, one of the elements of our philosophy is full accountability and transparency. In addition to ensuring that donors are aware of where their money is going, we also want to be as clear and accurate as possible when representing the overall donation dollars we receive and their application to projects in schools across the country. If you have been keeping track of our impact numbers on the DonorsChoose.org homepage (under “Thanks to your generosity…”) or the DonorsChoose.org Impact page, you may have noticed that there was an approximately $500,000 decrease in the dollars that have been donated to
