Erica Peto, a Teach for America teacher at Martin Sortun Elementary School in Kent, Washington, and her classroom were recently featured on Seattle’s Channel Q13 Fox News. Erica realized that her third grade students would have a stronger grasp of math concepts if she could apply these abstract math rules to real world situations – through math literature books! These tools help kids to make sense of math and build logical connections that they will remember.
Erica teaches in a high poverty school where over 50% of her students qualify for free or reduced lunch. She compares the current math materials to jelly and the math literature books as the peanut butter – which will make the math subjects even tastier and help the learning to stick! When Fox reporter Maria Arcega-Dunn heard about Erica’s “math sandwich” request, she decided to feature Erica’s classroom on the morning news! You can view the segment here.
